This morning the boys and I attended our church service. At our church, the children attend the service for the first fifteen or so minutes while the pastor preaches a message specifically to them. He calls them all up to the alter and they sit on the steps as he talks to them. It is really cute, and the messages are always tailored to children. Though the adults can learn quite a bit too. This week our pastor used an analogy of a candy cane and a staff to give his lesson. While trying to explain the significance of a shepperd's crook or staff, in biblical times, he used the candy cane as a prop (because it is shaped like a staff), and he gave each child a candy cane. His message went on to explain how shepperds used their crooks to gather their herds and Jesus was a shepperd and we are his herd etc. etc. At the end of this part of the service, the children go to their respective Sunday School classes.
After the service and Sunday School, we gather for a fellowship hour. At this time, parishioners mingle while they enjoy refreshments. The pastors generally make their rounds and speak to everyone. Today the boys were eating cupcakes with their cousins when the pastor came by to say hello. To my surprise Matt was very friendly without any prodding from me. Without hesitation he told the minister that he forgot something when he was speaking up there. The pastor inquisitively asked, "I did?" Matt replied, "yes!" Matt went on to say that he (the pastor) should have said that two candy canes put together make a heart which is God's love for us. He told him that he new that because he took Abby's candy cane and put it together with his during Sunday School. Honestly I do not know where Matt came up with this. He never ceases to amaze me. While sometimes I think he's never listens, I guess he does. For certain, he is always thinking!

what a smartie you have. very perceptive too. i make valentine cupcakes with candy canes together for hearts.
Oh, that is so sweet! The later service at my church is done the exact same way, and it is always so cute with all of the little kids sitting on the steps; paying such close attention.
It is really a great thing that your kids get to grow up with their cousins. So many families are spread out all over the country and miss all of the good that can come from that closeness.
You must have been so proud of your boy!
Cute picture and cute story :)
It's funny to hear about his soft side :)
awwwww that was adorable and sweet - and what a cutie pie! :o)
i love that children (at least it seems like it) seem to be growing up more with GOD NOW then in the past...Kai and I attend Church regularly as well....i think it is very important for him.
very smart- two candy canes make a heart - you have to love that!

that's pretty clever! Good for him for having the guts to say this. That is really nice that you have that hour after church to meet with everyone. I always feel like people are running out afterwards- we are always the last ones there...still talking.
