American Idol verse the Presidential Election?

It's been a while since I've posted a thought for Thursday. In any event, last night I watched the 11:00 o'clock news. I sat watching in disbelief with respect to the two main stories. The first being about Britney Spears. I don't even want to go there, except to ask why does the media even dignify this as news worthy. It's not. I say, just leave it alone.

The second story really pricked my side. It compared American Idol to the Presidential Race. How insulting! They polled people to see what topic carried more weight in their lives- the Presidential Election or American Idol. Sadly many of those interviewed chose American Idol. What does that say about society? I would like to think this is just main-stream media's distortion tactics - find some ignorant people and paint them as the "norm". My guess is that those people who chose American Idol are just a tiny minority and do not represent the majority. That is my hope, at least. It's a pretty sad day, when media outlets are making ridulous attempts to down play our intelligence. Their thought is if they say it, some how it will become the truth.

to be continued... I am sure I will think of more about this subject!

wow.
so interesting...
But you know, it probably does ring a little too true for much of the generation of new voters, and many of our generation as well. I mean really, what do people more more energy into? What do people spend hours watching and then talking about? It's sad to think how many people sit in front of the tv and watch that stuff... when we really should be devoting at least a little of that time to researching and getting to know presidential candidates and details of things going on in our government. How many people are up to date on the American Idol competition each week, vs how many people can tell you both sides of a political issue?
I don't watch American Idol, but I don't know all that much about politics either. I need to invest more time in it that's for sure. But it's a pretty sad day when someone admits that something like AI has more of an impact on their life than the Presidential election. Just wow.

horrible! for one, i'm sick of hearing about britney. let's get over it.

comparing the election to american idol - give me a break. i'm very interested in politics and how they affect me. i have never voted for an american idol contestant, but i've voted in every election (especially local elections) since i turned 18. i'm actually excited about the 'movement' the media seems to think that obama is starting with young voters. i hope it lasts through the election!

yeah I am so sick of britney.

AI vs. Prsidential Election!?!
I really hope that the people that choose AI are really minority.

Amy,
I think you have touched on something very important to all of us. It is pretty sad that people are admitting that AI has more of an impact. It is just proving Dad right when he says that "people today are lazy about getting info."
As for getting into politics... This could get ugly!!!

I think this whole subject says a lot about what is wrong with America today. I'll leave it at that!

Amy!

Great post!

As for Britney - i think everyone is tired of hearing about her...the girls need some serious help.

And speakinf of Ai - that is very sad + scary because the way our nutty world is - i am not even surprised that people are more in to AI then the election about electing someone to "run" our "country". (humph)(although that to is always scary)

hummm....voting for a PRESIDENT or the next Britney....quite a toss up huh????

LOL

(hug for coming by and seeing me in my blog world today, i commented back atcha)

Thanks for stopping by my blog Amy!

I agree with you on the Britney thing. The media just needs to leave that girl alone so that she can get her life back together!

Have a good night!

So extremely sad...very very sad.
Thanks for stopping by my blog and leaving a comment. Remodeling sucks. I wish I had a nanny, a cabana boy, and a robot builder mad. Not necessarily in that order :)

I am proud to say I have voted in almost every election held since I was 18, and have never voted on AI. And yes, I do watch. I do understand where people get turned off to politics when the mudslinging and empty promises start making the rounds. The amount of money spent on these campaigns is sickening. You basically are voting for the campaign donors. their voices are the ones that will be heard once they are elected and someone without the money doesn't stand a chance.
Brittney is just a diversion to what is really going on.

It never fails to amaze me that no matter the subject, the news will find the most uneducated, redneck looking hillbilly (and I say that with love cause I am a redneck hillbilly) to interview. Every time.

Hi Amy! I'm so glad you stopped by and commented, because I was getting ready to do the same here. I found Mary yesterday and just loved her blog which, of course, led me to you and also to Lisa. Ran out of time last night, or I would have commented then! This post of yours is great. Sad, but great--and I'm glad you wrote about it. At the risk of turning into my grandmother prematurely :) I find myself shaking my head over these things!

At least we can always count on Maybelline's Great Lash--love the Royal Blue! HA. Hope to "see" more of you over at my place, because I'll be here a lot!

Hope you and your family have a great weekend, too.

Are you Serious! That is very Sad! Hopefully the majority asked were of the younger generations that don't know better.

Although, I have to admit that in the past I have been sucked into the Stupid American Idol show but this year I am making myself stay away. It is a complete waste of time considering that most of their past Idols (excluding Carrie Underwood and KElly Clarkson) have not made big singing careers or have had their contracts terminated.

They did not. Say it isn't so!

What is this world coming too?

I missed this on the news, my Hubby has been glued to the pres elect and therefore I have been watching as well, it's not that I don't find it interesting, important, it's just that it is always on, kinda like Britney- it just gets old. I try to stay up to date on the major issues, the nit picking I turn off.

dear god. i have never watched american idol and certainly don't plan to start. i'm a little more concerned about the state of our nation... what is wrong with these people!

not to be realistic or anything, but the Idol commands 75 million votes in two hours....the presidential election commands about 130 million votes over the course of a whole day.

make of the statistics what you will.

aside from which, if you were to ask an eleven year old girl (who can't vote in the presidential election but who can vote for american idol and who wants to be a singer when she grows up) "Which of the two votes is more important?"

what do you think she's gonna say?
