Just thinking a lot lately....

I got this following essay emailed to me recently. While I do not know who wrote it, I think it gets to the point on many levels. I think the moral fibers of our country are deteriorating everyday, and I worry where we will be a year from now.

I don't think being a minority makes you a victim of anything except numbers.

The only things I can think of that are truly discriminatory are things like the United Negro College Fund, Jet Magazine, Black Entertainment Television and Miss Black America. Try to have things like the United Caucasian College Fund, Cloud Magazine, White Entertainment Television or Miss White America; and see what happens...Jesse Jackson will be knocking down your door.

Guns do not make you a killer. I think killing makes you a killer. You can kill someone with a baseball bat or a car, but no one is trying to ban you from driving to the ball game.

I believe they are called the Boy Scouts for a reason, which is why there are no girls allowed. Girls belong in the Girl Scouts! ARE YOU LISTENING MARTHA BURKE?

I have the right 'NOT' to be tolerant of others because they are different, weird or tick me off.

When 70% of the people who get arrested are black in cities where 70% of the population is black, that is not racial profiling; it is the Law of Probability.

I believe that if you are selling me a milkshake, a pack of cigarettes, a newspaper or a hotel room, you must do it in English! As a matter of fact, if you want to be an American citizen, you should have to speak English!

My father and grandfather didn't die in vain so you can leave the countries you were born in to come over and disrespect ours.

I think the police should have every right to shoot you if you threaten them after they tell you to stop. If you can't understand the word 'freeze' or 'stop' in English, see the above lines.

I don't think just because you were not born in this country, you are qualified for any special loan programs, government sponsored bank loans or tax breaks, etc., so you can open a hotel, coffee shop, trinket store or any other business.

We did not go to the aid of certain foreign countries and risk our lives in wars to defend their freedoms, so that decades later they could come over here and tell us our constitution is a living document and open to their interpretations.

I don't hate the rich; I don't pity the poor.

I know pro wrestling is fake, but so are movies and television. That doesn't stop you from watching them.

I think Bill Gates has every right to keep every penny he made and continue to make more. If it ticks you off, go and invent the next operating system that's better and put your name on the building.

It doesn't take a whole village to raise a child right, but it does take a parent to stand up to the kid and smack their little behinds when necessary, and say 'NO!'

I think tattoos and piercing are fine if you want them, but please don't pretend they are a political statement. And please, stay home until that new lip ring heals; I don't want to look at your ugly infected mouth as you serve me French fries!

I am sick of 'Political Correctness.' I know a lot of black people and not a single one of them was born in Africa; so how can they be 'African-Americans'? Besides, Africa is a continent. I don't go around saying I am a European-American because my great, great, great, great, great, great grandfather was from Europe. I am proud to be from America and nowhere else.

While my personal political aspirations are nil, should I ever run for office.... my name will always be Amy Jean Kelly ...... ALWAYS!!!

I found myself shaking my head 'yes' along with so many of those . . . I am really happy that the United States is such a welcoming country and that we do have such a diverse population, but where does the flexibility and accomodation stop?! It is hard for me to think that my children may some day be denied opportunities because they are White!

I have to give you props for posting this. I've seen this before and I really enjoy the concepts presented. Things are really backwards these days, huh? I believe in equality for all, but so many people think they deserve certain things because of race, creed, gender, etc. We have to earn our rights by being good citizens. I also agree that many believe they are discriminated against for the very same reasons. While I know it exists, I don't believe that everyone of a certain race, creed or gender is a victim of it. Thanks for posting, I appreciate it!

Oh my goodness, Amy--I'm so proud of you that you posted this. I got it in e-mail, too, but 95% of the time I'm way too big of a chicken to admit how I really feel about this type of thing. The whole political correctness thing is really old to me, and it makes me sad what is happening in the state I was born in and have lived all my life. I am really, really scared about some things about the future; just can't think about it too much! To me, it seems as if there is a huge lack of common sense going around. People are people, some are good and some aren't--but I still think it shouldn't be shameful to tell it like it is, like the Law of Probability. To me, that's just a big DUH--of course that makes sense, and it's just a fact, it's not anybody being mean or racist or anything else. I'm very concerned about what the next five years or so will bring. I get very concerned when so many seem to be so enamored of people who aren't proud to be Americans. And I could go on and on. I really worry about what the world is going to be like when today's little kids are grown up. I'll stop now, but good for you for not being a chicken to say what you stand for.

You go girl. I'm in total agreement with everything in the essay.

I'm an American and very proud of it.

It has taken me a long time to think about what to write for this comment, I’ve been reading and enjoying your blog for a long time. I’ve tried to take a step back and temper my initial disappointment with this post. As a relatively recent immigrant to the US for a long time the only thing I was eligible to do in this country was pay taxes. At the hands of the INS I met incompetence, hostility and contempt. I am a blond-haired, blue-eyed, Cambridge-educated Briton. I honestly can’t imagine what non-English speaking immigrants went through after what I faced. It took me a long time to get over the way immigrants are treated here. I understand that sometimes tolerance can make you feel like you’re being taken advantage of, but I believe that what makes America great is its diversity, its warmth, open-heartedness and (hopefully) open-mindedness.

Amy said...

Alli,

I am sorry that you have had negative experiences with INS. I wish you success with the process. While I never intended this post to be about immigration, I am sure the system is flawed. Since the topic has been brought to light, I will speak to it.

I love America. While some of us have immigrated here from other countries, most of us have ancestors who have done this also. I would like to think that most people are here or come here because they want to be here.

More importantly I would like to think they want to build a good life and to be PRODUCTIVE, hardworking people. Unfortunately, there are people (some immigrants and some not) who feel they are simply entitled to everything and are not responsible for anything. It is this mindset that troubles me. I welcome immigrants and diversity is what makes the U.S. a great nation. I have friends who have come here from other countries and they work hard, actually harder than some people who were born here. I simply believe that everyone in this country should contribute to this nation's greatness.

For me this essay was more about policical correctness and reverse discrimmination. Some how the PC idiology has been indoctrinated into our society and is considered by many to be the only way. I whole heartedly disagree.

When we are now considered biggots for referring to a presidential candiate with his whole name(including his middle name), there is a problem. When a presidential candidate refuses to salute the flag there is a problem. As an American this makes me sad. My grandfather's, and my husband have fought for my freedom and for everyone else's and the flag is a symbol of this freedom. I often wonder if I would be able to write or read on this forum if it weren't for this freedom?

Warm Regards,
Amy

This sure does make ya think a bit! Thanks for the interesting essay... a lot of great points there.

I just read your reply to the comment... you amaze me, I don't know how you find the right words, but you did it and I applaud you.

AliBlahBlah said...

Amy –

Thanks for the speedy reply. I see your point that you saw the piece as being about reverse discrimination, and I think you make some very excellent points. That articles like that can provoke a backlash against immigrants was my concern. It wasn’t meant as a criticism – I think you’re brave for putting your thoughts out there! As a normally shy and retiring person I don’t usually stick my neck out and what I wrote was not meant to provoke merely to expose the other side to some of the things that were mentioned.

I admire your writing, and respect your right to defend and cherish your country.

I will retreat to my hole with my tail firmly between my legs!

Your friend,

~ A

Amy, you had to know I'd be back to check things out over here, as I assumed there would be some sort of debate. There is, and it is one of the good ones. I LOVE respectful discussions. THIS IS WHAT IT'S ALL ABOUT. I think your response to A. was beautifully written and worded. And I certainly see what A. was saying, too. There are lots of flaws in the system; whenever you're dealing with humans, there will be flaws. But I happen to feel it is still the best system around, since everybody seems to want to come here. Out of all of the countries in the world, this seems to be the one that so many CHOOSE to come to, so it must not be too bad. And I say welcome to all who want to come here to find a better life for themselves and their families, and who come here to be happy and proud to be here. What I have a problem with as far as immigration goes is this--if a person comes here and is not happy and does not want to assimilate in any way, well I don't understand what the point is. And if you're ILLEGAL, you are breaking the law. And if you're ILLEGAL, you don't have rights. And that's not being "mean." ILLEGAL is the opposite of LEGAL! If I moved to France, I would expect that I should arrive there, prepared to speak French. And to conform to French ways. Why on earth would I go there if I didn't want to do that? But, even doing all of that, there would be some French people who would still be less-than-happy to see me. It's people. Some good, some not so much. Everywhere. Well, maybe not everywhere--just in all of the places I've been :). I love these discussions. I love having the freedom to express my opinions without a thought. Even though I have concerns for the future, I am happy. And that is a choice ANYONE and EVERYONE can make. This is fun, Amy! :)

Amy said...

Alli,

I genuinely appreciate your thoughts. I like how Kim-d phrased it - respectful discussions! No need to go anywhere, okay?

Peace out,
Amy

I agree with p.c. being b.s. but if your point is about using the middle name, as a middle name fine, but don't use the middle name to insinuate he's a terrorist or with "them" or add another name too to really get the "point" across. You don't hear anyone emphasizing Rodham. JMHO. I hope it didn't come across too bithcy. not it's intent.

Ok, so this post is way heavy for me to comment on. But I will say in response to your comment on my blog . . . I can't help but antagonize people. I can't control myself. I'm one loony chica.

great points across the board. people thinking they are entitled to something because of the color of their skin - bogus. if you think you are entitled to it, you better have worked for it.

reverse discrimination - there is a lot of it and it is funny how 'the other side' doesn't see it that way. if the tables were turned we all know what kind of fire would be lit then. go figure.

Amy said...

Robyn,

I never insinuated anything. Rather, I questioned if the candidate has a middle name then why we are we not "supposed" to make reference to it? Why should calling him by his name be racist? That was my point. Clearly this mindset is driven by the policically correct ideology!

Respectfully,
Amy

Robyn said...

I didn't mean to say you yourself insinuated, but most people don't use their middle names on a daily basis is all I'm saying and the speaker in reference used that middle name over and over and over again in one speech. But can't give a reason why on his talk show junket since his speech.

Wow, imagine this...I'm back again. Just want to say...

I think our next President should be a blogger. It is clear to me that the best, smartest people are bloggers. I LOVE this! The thing is, there is no need for people--and and all people, in politics or not, across the board--to be nasty, hurtful and disrespectful. We can all have our own thoughts and our own way of looking at things without getting nasty. This proves it. BLOG ON. HAHA :)

Have a great day, everybody. And you, Amy Jean Kelly--I just love you! Even though you were a cheerleader. BWAHAHAHAHA!!!!!

Hi Amy!

I didn't have time to blog yesterday and just popped over here to tell you to stop by my blog if you get a second, I tagged you for a meme. (it's an easy one, if you feel like it, okay?) Anyhoo,..I feel like I walked into a firestorm here! :-)

All I have to say about the whole subject is this,..we (as in all people) have got to learn to live with each other, whether or not we like each other, just peacefully co-exist. No group of people, of any ethnicity or race, are better than anyone else. We all put our pants on one leg at a time, right? While it hurts me to have anyone talk trash about the U.S., I guess therein lies the beauty of America. That is one of the rights and privileges we've been given. My two cents!

Have a great weekend!

Lizzy

Girl you are some kind of sassy!!! Lordy, 40 comments...you go roll and clutch your bad self!

Oh, and I will add, I am not going to let Big D read this, it is bed time and he will get too fired up and I don't mean in a good way. Instead of giving me similes of our love, he'll talk about being PC and gun control.

One last thing, I agree, I do. I'm sorry, that might make me close minded (which I know I am not) or stupid (I'm a smarty) or judgmental (I can be, but it has nothing to do with ethnicity...it is called being human). We are on a dangerous path. I could pull out my history books and recite instances where nations have fallen due to ideals that we are trying to institute, but I won't. Instead, I am going to be naughty and rebel. I think I'll start saying words like "black" or....and this one is really risky "illegal" ohhhhhhh. I would hate to be in trouble for pointing out that something is against the law or that someone broke the law when they did not follow the rules, but I think I will risk it and say it anyway. Yeah, I think that when it comes to my being flexible, I'll leave that for Big Daddy's enjoyment.

Hey, I saw your picture at your sisters....if anyone gives you flack about your post, I'll be your cheerleader.
